Una de nuestras obligaciones y prioridades es la educación a través de la imagen, tratamos de acercarnos a los escolares más jóvenes y a los adolescentes. Desde el festival siempre hemos sido partidarios de acercar el cine a los docentes. Por eso, en esta sección del Certamen podremos disfrutar de diferentes propuestas. Todas ellas tratando los temas más candentes y actuales sin olvidar la diversión y la diversidad.

One of our liabilities and priorities is education through images, we try to approach younger schoolchildren and teenagers. From the festival we have always been in favour of bringing the cinema closer to the teachers. That is why in this section of the contest we will be able to enjoy different proposals. Wenju Chow una animadora de 2D y 3D afincada en Nueva York. Es experta en trabajos basaos en la caracterización y en los cuentacuentos con una ilustración sencilla e infantil. Inspirada en dibujos animales que transmiten una sensación reconfortante, decidió crear obras más significativas y provocadores ayudada por su pensamiento reflexivo.

// Wenju Chow is a 2D and 3D animator based in New York. She expertizes in character-based works and storytelling with a simple and children illustration style. Being inspired by comforting character animation, She decided to create more meaningful and provoking works with her thoughtful thinking.

// After 19 years of first directing assistant, script work and production management Anne Jammet became a director in 2019. She has made live shows as well as fiction - commercials, clips, series, feature films, TV films, TV shows, sports shows, TV shows, web series.... took part in more than 150 audiovisual projects. She also gives courses in film schools, master level.

Fokion Xenos es un director y animador griego apasionado por combinar su experiencia en diseño gráfico con técnicas físicas de stop-frame. Después de graduarse de TEI de Atenas en 2014, Fokion dirigió una serie de cortometrajes, videos musicales y comerciales en colaboración con Deep Green Sea y Out There Studios. Se incorporó a la Escuela Nacional de Cine y Televisión en 2017, donde ha continuado desarrollando sus habilidades de dirección y narrativa. Aquí ha dirigido y animado High Art (2017), Deep Dive 9 (2017) y su película de graduación Heatwave (2019).

// Fokion Xenos is a Greek director and animator with a passion for combining his background in graphic design with physical, stop-frame techniques. After graduating from TEI of Athens in 2014, Fokion directed a series of short films, music videos and commercials in collaboration with Deep Green Sea and Out There Studios. He joined the National Film and Television School in 2017, where he has continued to develop his directing and narrative skills. Arjan Brentjes comenzó su carrera como ilustrador y, en 2008, se cambió a las imágenes en movimiento. Desde 2010 se ha dedicado a la realización de cortometrajes y, sobre todo en los últimos años, a los de animación. Con frecuencia, Arjan lleva al público de vuelta a un estilo visual del pasado, para mirar al presente y, de ahí en adelante, al futuro. De este modo, comenta con ingenio el desarrollo de nuestra sociedad tecnológica y la arrogancia del hombre.

// Arjan Brentjes started his career as a painter, and in 2008 he switched to moving images. Since 2010 he is dedicated to making short film, the last years mostly animation. Arjan often takes the viewer back to a visual style from the past, to look at our present, or future from there. // Javier Fresser is a prestigious director and screenwriter, who has won 6 Goya prices and produced very successful films such as El milagro de P. Tinto, Camino or two adaptations of Mortadelo y Filemón. His last film, Campeones, was the most outstanding Spanish production in 2018. Guillermo Fesser, well known by his programme Gomaespuma, is a writer and correspondent journalist in United States of America. Compaginando un perfil artístico con su carrera profesional como Ingeniera Informática, en 2012 decidió dedicarse en exclusiva a la animación y contar historias. "Roberto" es su primer cortometraje y la razón de este cambio de vida. Co-autora de más de 30 manuales sobre software de diseño gráfico, actualmente es profesora online de Animación 3D en Pixelodeon y en la Facultad de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Murcia.

// She brought up her artistic profile with her professional career as computer engineer until 2012, when she decided to commit herself to animation and storytelling. "Roberto" is her first short film and the reason she changed her life. She’s co-author of more than 30 graphic design software manuals. Currently she’s an online 3D animation professor at Pixelodeon and the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Murcia.

Ha trabajado en producciones stop-motion como animadora, directora de arte y creadora de títeres en cortometrajes como Apple The Trial (2013), Flirt (2015), Indescribable (en proceso de finalización); y como asistente de arte y animación en el largometraje "Bob Cuspe, we do not like people" (en producción) de Coala Filmes. C. Kater es miembro del Campinas Animation Film Center y cofundadora y coordinadora de La Extraordinary Week Shows Animated.

// Camila Kater is a director, animator and production designer. She earned a PhD in Media Studies and Film and Television Production from the Anglia Ruskin University (Cambridge, Reino Unido). She worked in stop motion productions as animator, art director, and puppet maker in short films such as “Apple the trial” (2013), Flirt (2015), “Indescribable” (postproduction) and art and animation assistant in the full-leigh film “Bob Cuspe, we do not like people”, a Coala Films production. C. Kater is a member of the Campina Animation Films Center and co- founded and coordinates The Extraordinary Week Shows Animated.

Nuestras trayectorias profesionales se unieron en la productora Nexus Creatividad Audiovisual en 2015. Desde entonces, hemos desarrollado numerosos proyectos en los que nos complementamos tanto a nivel técnico como artístico. Nos interesan las historias que no suelen ser contadas, las vidas de personas que no encajan en lo hegemónico y lo normativo. Entre nuestros proyectos conjuntos se encuentra el documental de ficción Héroes del Patrimonio Edad Media (2017) el largometraje "Nikolina" (2016), película realizada con ayuda de la Comunidad Autónoma de la Región de Murcia, que actualmente se encuentra en fase de postproducción y el largometraje "NuMun", que está en fase de búsqueda de financiación.

// We joint Nexus Creatividad Audiovisual producers in 2015. Since then, we’ve developed several projects where we have combined our technical and artistic skills and expertise. We take interest in those kinds of stories that are not usually told; the lives of people who do not fit the hegemonic nor normative standards. Among our projects we have the fiction documentary "Héroes del Patrimonio Edad Media" (2017) and the feature film "Nikolina" (2016), with the collaboration of "Comunidad Autónoma de la Región de Murcia", which is currently in post-production; as well as the feature film "NuMun", which is still looking for funding.

Una sección que aborda desde diferentes puntos de vista la situación laboral en que viven muchas personas. Cinco cortometrajes que nos acercan a diferentes realidades y sus consecuencias. Desde hace 5 años colaboran con nosotros en esta sección personas muy concienciadas por estas situaciones y que pertenecen al sindicato Comisiones Obreras.

SWEAT LABOR

This section addresses, from different points of view, the uncertain working situation many people are in. Five different short films will approach us to different realities and their consequences. For five years we have been working in collaboration with very committed people from Comisiones Obreras union, to help raise awareness about these working situations.

Dustin Rees (1981) nació en Zúrich y vivió en Reino Unido hasta que volvió a Suiza en 1991. Siguiendo su pasión por la animación se graduó en la Escuela de Lucerna de Arte y Diseño (HSLU) in 2007. Desde entonces ha dirigido y producido varios encargos de tráileres, vídeos musicales, cortometrajes así como sus propios proyectos. Enseña en la HSLU, dirige talleres de cine y animación y es proyeccionista cinematográfico en varios cines. Sus trabajos previos han sido participado en varios festivales internacionales de cine. Filmografía: Signs (2020); Ransom (2012); Borderline (2011), The Bellinger (2007) y The Cleaner (2006).

// Zurich-born Dustin Rees (1981) grew up in the UK before returning to Switzerland in 1991. Following his love for animation he graduated at the Lucerne School of Art and Design (HSLU) in 2007. Alexandre Beaumont-Vachon es un cineasta quebequense de Saint-Félicien, Canadá. En 2015, su gran pasión por la aventura lo llevó a obtener una licenciatura en Liderazgo al aire libre en la Universidad de Québec en Chicoutimi. Hoy en día, continúa trabajando como guía al aire libre en muchos campos del turismo de aventura, como caminatas, expediciones en canoa y rafting, así como técnico de seguridad fluvial para escenarios de películas. Durante un viaje en solitario de 18 meses por América Latina, Alexandre sintió una creciente necesidad de actuar sobre las injusticias sociales que vio en estos países. Para ello, decidió volver a la escuela en 2018 y estudiar cine documental. En 2019, fue a República Dominicana a filmar "Playeros: Beach Workers". Un documental sobre las condiciones laborales de los haitianos en su país vecino que ha ganado reconocimiento y está siendo distribuido por Spira. Su próxima película se rodará en Japón durante el viaje en bicicleta de diez meses en el que se embarcará en 2020.

// Alexandre Beaumont-Vachon is a Québécois filmmaker from Saint-Félicien, Canada. In 2015, his great passion for adventure led him to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Outdoor Leadership at the University of Québec at Chicoutimi. Today, he continues to work as an outdoor guide in many fields of adventure tourism such as hiking, canoe expeditions and rafting as well as a river safety technician for film sets. During an 18 month-long solo trip in Latin America, Alexandre felt an increasing need to act upon the social injustices that he saw in these countries. To do this, he decided to go back to school in 2018 and study documentary filmmaking. In 2019, he went to the Dominican Republic to shoot "Playeros : Beach Workers". A documentary about the working conditions of Haitians in their neighbouring country that has won recognition and is being distributed by Spira. His next film will be shot in Japan during the ten month- long bikepacking trip that he will embark on in 2020.

Isaías R. Jiménez (18/08/1973, Málaga, España). Director, guionista y actor de cine, teatro, televisión y publicidad. Trabaja como realizador, operador de cámara y editor freelance para diferentes productoras. Es director y autor teatral de varios montajes teatrales con Teatro Oberón. Ha dirigido, escrito y producido los cortometrajes en 35 mm «El festival» (2007), «Sit tibi terra levis» (2003), «Una mujer con pañuelo» (2001) y «La carta» (1999), seleccionados y premiados en múltiples festivales. «La valoración» (2019) es su quinto cortometraje como director.

// Isaías R. Jiménez (18th of August 1973, Málaga, Spain) is a director, screenwriter and a movie, theater, television and commercial’s actor. He works as a producer, cameraperson y freelance editor for different producers. He is director and theatrical author for several theater staging with Teatro Oberón. He has directed, written and produced the 35mm short films "El Festival" (2007), "Sit tibi terra levis" (2003), "Una mujer con pañuelo" (2001) and "La Carta" (1999). They were all selected and awarded in several Festivals. "La valoración" (2019) is his fifth short film as a director.

Estudió Comunicación Audiovisual en la Universidad Antonio de Nebrija, un master en la ECAM y dirección en La Central de Cine. Tras muchos años dedicado a la publicidad comenzó a trabajar en ficción. Ha dirigido un largometraje: Smoking Club, varios cortometrajes entre los que destacan El Vals del Autónomo o La máquina del Tiempo, diferentes series como Neverfilms o Bajo La Red (Ganadora del Globo de Oro a mejor serie digital Europea en Hamburgo) y los documentales Toy Wars y el Sentido del Cacao.

// Alberto Utrera studied Audiovisual Communication at the University Antonio de Nebrija, master at ECAM (School of Cinema and Audiovisuals of Madrid, by its acronym in Spanish) and directing at La Central de Cine. He started to work in fiction after many years working in advertising. He has directed the feature film "Smoking Club", short films such as "El vals del autónomo" or "La máquina del tiempo", several TV shows such as "Neverfilms" or "Bajo la red" (winner of a "Best European Digital Television Series" at the Golden Globe in Harmburg) and documentaries such as "Toy Wars" and "Sentido del cacao".

Son muchos los documentales que, por espacio, no pueden entrar en nuestra Sección Oficial, pero consideramos que no pueden pasar desapercibidos. Esta sección nos acerca a realidades a veces realmente crudas del Reino Unido, Kenia, Francia, México, Grecia y Mongolia. Estas películas desde nuestro punto de vista deberían ser visionados por todos los jóvenes. No les dejarán indiferentes.

DOCUMENTING REALITY

Due to a lack of time, many documentaries cannot make it to our Official Section (Sección oficial), but we believe they cannot go unseen. This section approaches us to harsh situations of United Kingdom, Kenya, France, Mexico, Greece and Mongolia. From our point of view, every youngster should watch these short films. They won't be left indifferent by them.

Arantxa Hernández Barthe es una cineasta española afincada en Londres (Reino Unido). Su corto debut, City of Children, se estrenó en Visions du Reel en 2019. Después recorrió el mundo ganando varios premios en diferentes festivales tales como: Clermont-Ferrand, DocumentaMadrid y Poitiers. También estuvo nominado a los premios Grierson. Se formó como periodista y comenzó su carrera cubriendo noticias de temas políticas y sociales para un periódico en Madrid. En 2017 se mudó a Reino Unido para realizar un Máster en Dirección de Documentales en la National Film and Television School (NFTS). Actualmente trabaja como investigadora para una serie de documentales del National Geographic sobre las drogas.

// She is a Spanish documentary filmmaker, currently based in London, UK. Her debut film, City of Children, premiered at Visions du Reel in 2019, before travelling around the world and winning several awards, from festivals such as Clermont-Ferrand, DocumentaMadrid, and Poitiers. It was also nominated for a Grierson award. Her background is in journalism, and she began my career covering political and social issues for a national newspaper in Madrid. Iker Esteibarlanda (1992) trabaja como director, guionista y editor. Tras estrenar su primer cortometraje titulado BENEATH THE TREES (2014) en festivales internacionales y ser el director más joven de la Sección Oficial del 15o Festival de Cine de Lanzarote, ha desarrollando su carrera en el ámbito del cine documental, intercalándola con la realización de vídeos corporativos, pero siempre contando historias humanas. BEFORE I DIE (2020) es su segundo cortometraje.

// Iker Esteibarlanda (1992) works as a film director, screenwriter and film editor. After the premier in several International Film Festivals of his first short film “Beneath the trees” (2014) and be the youngest director at the “Sección Oficial” (Official Section) of the 15th Film Festival of Lanzarote, he as developed his career around documentary films. He has also filmed corporate videos but telling humane stories. “Before I die” (2020) is his second short film.

Nacido en Montfermeil, Ladj Ly comenzó su carrera en una empresa fundada por sus amigos de la infancia, Kim Chapiron and Romain Gavras, llamada “Kourtrajmé collective” Comenzó en el cine como actor y, posteriormente, como director con su primer corto “Montfermeil les bosquets”, rodado en 1997. En 2004, dirigió junto con el fotógrafo JR el documental “28 millimeters”. En 2008 rodó el corto “Go fast connection” para Kourtrajmé collective. En 2014 rodó el documental “365 days in Mali” junto con Said Belktibia y Benkora Sangaré para dar voz a una turbulenta región donde las milicias y los Tuareg se preparan para el enfrentamiento. En 2017 dirigió “Les Misérables”, nominado a los premios César. En 2018 rodó su primer largometraje, inspirado en el corto que lleva su nombre. La película ganó el premio del jurado del Festival de cine de Cannes en 2019.

// Native from Montfermeil, Ladj Ly began his career with the Kourtrajmé collective (slang for for “Short-Film” in French), founded in 1995 by his childhood friends Kim Chapiron and Romain Gavras. He starts working in cinema as an actor and then as a director with his first short film “Montfermeil les bosquets” shot in 1997. At the same time, he worked on several film and TV documentaries making of. // Jaime Fidalgo is a writer and a director. He was born in Madrid (Spain) but raised in Guadalajara (México) where he spent his childhood and discovered his passion for the cinema. Mikel Konate (Madrid, Spain, 1982) is an independent video- journalist who has worked with media since 1999. He has been a news cameraperson since 2005 covering political and social movement news. Since 2014 has focused his job in migration, humanitarian crisis and conflicts for media such as Reuters, The Associated Press, CNN and La Sexta, among others.

Sil van Der Woerd (Tiel, Países Bajos, 1982) y Jorik Dozy (Amstelveen, Países Bajos, 1987) empezaron a co-dirigir en 2017. En sus vídeos musicales y cortos, combinan localizaciones exóticas, con una deslumbrante dirección de fotografía y unos efectos especiales de gran calidad para contar emotivas historias que, con frecuencia, tocan temas humanitarios y relacionados con la ecología. Estudió animación en la Universidad de Lucerna de Ciencias y Artes Aplicadas y en la Estonian Academy de Arte en Tallín. Sus películas "Nos About Us" y "Plug & Play" han sido mundialmente premiadas. Fue invitado en el "Animation Artist in Residence Tokio" en 2014. Su proyecto interactivo "Plug & Play" se ha convertido en un fenómeno en internet. Además de su trabajo personal, también trabaja como animadora freelance para series y películas en stop motion.

Razzak & Ukrainitz son el resultado de un juntar una ilustradora israelí con un documentalista canario de origen sirio. Él ha dirigido el largometraje Paradiso que obtuvo el Premio Rizoma y que formó parte del ciclo Un impulso colectivo, y La tempestad calmada estrenada internacionalmente en el Institute of Contemporary Arts de Londres. En 2017 es invitado al Proyecto XFilms del Festival Punto de Vista y seleccionado como Talents en la Berlinale y en la Biennale College Cinema de Venecia. Para ella, Los Espacios confinados es su primer cortometraje. Ambos tratan de mezclar la animación con el documental.

// Razzak y Ukrainitx are an Israeli illustrator with Canary Island documentary maker of Syrian origins. He has directed the feature film "Paradiso" and won a "Rizoma" award as well as being part of the "Un impulse colectivo" season; "La tempestad calmada" was internationally released at the Institute of Contemporary Arts of London. In 2017 he was a guest at the Proyecto XFulms of Punto de Vista Festival and selected as Talents at the Berlinale and the Biennale College Cinema of Venetia. "Los espacios confinados" is the first short film for her but both try to mix animation with documentary in their works.
